Running Injury? Read this!!

In a recent article titled After a Runner’s Fracture Heals, Fighting the Fear of Re-injury , written by Jen A. Miller, she states “Fear can be a useful protective mechanism for an athlete, but sometimes it holds us back too much”. The author writes that fear is often used to help one pay attention to what’s important, but sometimes fear can hold one back. For runners that have experienced injuries such as lower back pain, knee pain, aching joint, stress fractures and more can be affected by the fear of re-injury. Once an athlete has experienced such abrasion, the brain begins to react in order to protect your body. Jen Miller explains how the recovery does not only mean the healing process but also the healing of the body and mind.

Running is a low barrier activity with ongoing popular appeal. Running injury prevention is an important related area of study, with practical day-to-day training implications for many individuals.

What is a Stress Fracture?

One of the most common injuries in runners is a stress fracture. A stress fracture is a small crack or severe bruising in a bone caused by repeated mechanical stress. In order for a fracture to heal, the bones must be held in the correct position and protected. Soon after a fracture occurs, the body acts to protect the injured area.

Stress Fractures are common among athletes, who engage in sports like jogging/ running. The injury often occurs when the person makes a change in their activities. For some, weakened bones could lead to a stress fracture from a normal everyday activity like climbing up steps.

In most cases, it can take from 6-8 weeks for a stress fracture to heal. More serious stress fractures can take longer.

How to comeback from a Stress Fracture?

Coming back from a stress fracture is a difficult process for many runners. You can prevent running injuries by keeping everything in balance. Your mind and body will be in perfect shape, which is your best defense against injuries.

The amount of emotions runners will feel as they get back into the sport can be all over such as:

· Worrying about the potential of re-injury

· Fear lost of fitness

· Excitement to be running again

How can chiropractic care help with Stress Fractures?

A chiropractor will not manipulate the fractured bone; they will work on fixing the issues that may have contributed to the injury. This may involve:

· Improving joint coordination

· Speeding up recovery

· Improving joint mechanics

· Education and training to avoid injuries in the future

· Spinal alignment

· Neck adjustment

· Lumbar alignment
